Norfolk State University (NSU) invites nominations and applications for Dean of the Robert C. Nusbaum Honors College.  NSU is a proud HBCU founded in the depths of the Great Depression (1935) in a quest to achieve educational justice for all people. NSU is a public, comprehensive university with an enrollment of 5,600 students located in Norfolk, Virginia, a city of 247,000 along the Chesapeake Bay. NSU’s current faculty members honor the founders’ embracing spirit by deeply nurturing a diverse student population and transforming students’ lives through exemplary teaching, research, and service. 

The Robert C. Nusbaum Honors College has two component programs: the Alison J. and Ella W. Parsons General Honors Program for all majors and the Discipline-Specific Honors Programs (DSHP). The Honors College Dean traditionally assumes direct responsibility for the Parsons and DSHP tracks and collaborates directly with the Director of the prestigious Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics and Applied Sciences (DNIMAS) Science Honors Program for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors located within the College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET).  

Responsibilities

The Dean of the Robert C. Nusbaum Honors College is tasked with providing intellectual leadership and vision for the College and enhancing academic excellence for all students at NSU. The Dean oversees the Honors College curriculum; recruits, monitors and advises high achieving students; and plans and executes co-curricular events, including film festivals, speakers, and other events on campus, which are open to the community. The Honors College Dean also has responsibility for fundraising and building partnerships by engaging external community and other stakeholders.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from an accredited college or university in a discipline offered by the University and a distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, and service. The individual must have a demonstrated record as a well-respected, collaborative leader, have a strong interest in working with students from diverse backgrounds and improving access to higher education for all students, and be committed to the mission of HBCUs.

Compensation/Expected Start Date

Compensation is competitive and based upon qualifications and experience. Preferred starting date is in summer 2022.

  1. A letter of interest stating how the candidate’s experiences and qualifications connect with the required/preferred characteristics and priorities expressed in the position profile (this should include a characterization of teaching philosophy);
  2. A curriculum vitae;
  3. A diversity, equity, and inclusion statement that addresses experience in serving culturally, socially, and economically diverse student populations and how you continue to cultivate and foster diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  4. A statement on your philosophy and vision for leading an Honors College;
  5. Five (5) professional references with e-mails, telephone numbers, and a description of the candidate’s professional relationship with each reference listed (references will not be contacted without prior authorization from the applicant).
