The American Bar Foundation (ABF) invites applications for the position of Executive Director. The Executive Director leads the foremost research institute dedicated to the interdisciplinary empirical study of law, legal institutions, and legal processes.

The Executive Director provides leadership and direction for the Foundation, overseeing ABF’s research, programs, and exemplary residential Research Professors, Faculty Fellows, full-time staff, and part-time research assistance staff. They will be an accomplished scholar and researcher, a visionary leader, a strong relationship builder and resource developer, and an effective organizational administrator. A J.D. is required, and a Ph.D in the social sciences or humanities is strongly preferred. The successful candidate be enthusiastic about the American Bar Foundation’s mission and unique contributions to law and society and have experience and familiarity with the design and conduct of empirical interdisciplinary research on law, legal behavior, and legal institutions.

Established in 1952, the American Bar Foundation is a nonprofit, independent institute which conducts research on law, legal behavior, and legal institutions in the U.S. and internationally. The Foundation engages in empirical research on topics that have direct bearing on legal professionals in the course of their work, their lives, and in the world in which we live, with areas of study including the legal profession, civil justice, criminal justice, social policy, regulation, law and globalization, and legal history.
