The University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel (VPGC).

Reporting to the President, the VPGC is the chief legal officer for UMD, a member of the University’s leadership team, and responsible for managing all of the University’s legal affairs.

The Office of General Counsel (OGC) is the in-house law firm for UMD. The OGC helps its university clients fulfill their educational, research, and entrepreneurial missions in accord with the many legal and policy requirements applicable to public research universities. The OGC attorneys are problem solvers committed to helping their UMD clients achieve their goals in a creative, practical, and timely manner.

UMD seeks a highly accomplished and seasoned attorney who is a creative strategist, forward-looking problem solver, thought partner and consensus-building leader; has professional and personal qualities that inspire confidence and trust; and exemplifies the capacity to lead and advise in an innovative and complex higher education environment.

Minimum qualifications include: outstanding academic credentials, including a J.D. from a nationally regarded, ABA-accredited law school; a minimum of 12 years of broad legal practice with knowledge of higher education law in a university, law firm, government, or nonprofit setting; and admitted to practice law in Maryland or be eligible and admitted within one year of employment.
