Smith University, a 150-year old historically black liberal arts college dedicated to serving a diverse student body located in Charlotte, NC invites nominations and applications for an accomplished professional to serve as the Vice President for Student Affairs. Under the leadership of a new president, the university is seeking to consolidate and integrate multiple student affairs and student development functions in service to a multicultural, multigenerational and diverse student body, faculty and community. Building a collaborative environment and relationship to academic affairs is a key strategic priority.

The university is seeking a dynamic leader with knowledge and competitive intelligence of trends in student affairs and demonstrated success evaluating services and implementing best practices to ensure and enhance quality of life for all segments of the student population. The successful candidate will be a professional with knowledge of and an appreciation for the HBCU environment as well as an understanding of first-generation college students and parents. Experience developing and implementing a student-centered strategic plan that initiates efforts to better benefit student welfare and success.
The successful candidate will hold a Master’s Degree in counselling, student personnel, or a related field. An Ed.D. or Ph.D. in a related discipline is highly preferred. At least 8-10 years of progressively responsible experience in a college or university setting in one or more areas of student affairs including residence life, student life, counseling, health and wellness, student conduct or spiritual life.
The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of all federal regulations related to student affairs including FERPA and Title IV; must be comfortable with ambiguity and working in a fluid and developing environment; must possess excellent managerial, budgetary and team building skills.
The candidate should have demonstrated experience working with a diverse student population. An entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to forge relationships with external partners to broaden the University’s visibility and increase its array of services and opportunities for its students is highly desirable.
