The Portland State University Board of Trustees has appointed Dr. Ann Cudd as the 11th President of Portland State University, effective August 1, 2023. Dr. Cudd has been serving as Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh since September 2018. Prior to her service at Pitt, she served as Dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences at Boston University. Dr. Cudd holds a PhD in Philosophy and MA’s in both Economic and Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh and a BA in Mathematics and Philosophy from Swarthmore College. Read more here.
Ms. Marcelyn Potter has been selected as the new Senior Director of Development, Lam Family College of Business, at San Francisco State University. She will begin her role on March 13, 2023. Ms. Potter most recently served as the Executive Director of Development, Leadership Strategy and Engagement, at the University of California, San Diego, where she shaped the framework for the $5 million naming of the Pacific Center for Asset Management and formed the inaugural regional program toward achievement of the $3 billion campaign. Prior to that, she was the Senior Director of Development, Regional Giving, at the University of California, Los Angeles. Ms. Potter received her bachelor’s degree in marketing from Michigan State University.
The Clemson University Foundation (CUF) has appointed Ms. Regina Steele as its new Chief Financial Offcer. Ms. Steele will be responsible for the administration of $1 Billion+ endowment and serve as a key thought leader and driver of the CUF business model by developing, implementing, and evaluating short and long term strategic financial objectives, including endowment spending policies. Ms. Steele comes to Clemson after nearly 25 years serving with the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia where she served as Associate Vice Chancellor and Controller, leading the fiscal operations for the University System Office. Previously, she served as asset manager for the University System of Georgia Public Private Ventures Portfolio, where she was responsible for projects totaling more than $3 billion in principal outstanding bonds. Dr. Karmen Ten Napel has been appointed Central College's Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students. She will join Central College on Thursday, June 1, 2023. Dr. Ten Napel has served as the dean of students at Morningside University in Sioux City since 2014 and as associate vice president for student life and Title IX coordinator since 2019. At Morningside, Dr. Ten Napel’s student services portfolio included residence life, campus ministries, personal counseling, student health, diversity and inclusion, dining, student crises, conduct issues, strategic planning and work dedicated to retention, Title IX, training and student and parent communication. She led her campus through the COVID-19 pandemic and has overhauled policies and streamlined processes to support students in a more inclusive way. Dr. Ten Napel is a member of the Association of Title IX Administrators, on the Siouxland steering committee of Iowa Women Lead Change and a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. She is a two-time recipient of Morningside’s Thomas S. Thompson Staff Excellence Award. She received her Bachelor of Arts from South Dakota State University, Master of Science in education from Southwest Minnesota State University and Doctor of Education in adult and higher education administration from the University of South Dakota. Dr. Mark Suchman has been appointed as the new Executive Director for the American Bar Foundation beginning September 2023. Dr. Suchman is currently a Professor of Sociology at Brown University. He leads the Department of Sociology’s Work, Organizations, and Economy Program and directs the Organizational Studies track. He has also served as Program Director at the National Science Foundation’s Division of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure; chaired the American Sociological Association’s sections on Sociology of Law and on Organizations, Occupations, and Work; and led the Graduate Student Workshop of the Law and Society Association. Dr. Suchman’s research looks at how legal conditions create—or foreclose—opportunities for innovation and technological change. He has studied law and entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley, business disputing practices, and patient privacy in the American healthcare system. Dr. Suchman received his A.B. degree in sociology, summa cum laude, from Harvard University; JD from Yale Law School; and MA and Ph.D. in sociology from Stanford University. Read more here.
Dr. Paula Crone has been appointed as the new Provost for Western University of Health Sciences. Dr. Crone has served as Interim Provost since April 2022 and will begin her official role as Provost on February 6, 2023. Prior to her appointment, Dr. Crone served as Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP) & COMP-Northwest at Western University of Health Sciences, Interim Dean of COMP & COMP-Northwest and as Executive Associate Dean for COMP-Northwest. Dr. Crone helped launch the COMP-Northwest campus, the first new medical school in Oregon in over a century. Prior to joining the WesternU leadership team, Dr. Crone was a respected family practitioner in Oregon, serving as a partner in private practice and as the Program Director of the Family Practice Residency Program at Eastmoreland Hospital in Portland, Oregon. She also served as a consultant for graduate medical education development at Samaritan Health Services and on the Oregon Healthcare Workforce Task Group. Dr. Crone is an alumna of WesternU, earning her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific. Her Bachelor of Science in biology was earned at the University of Portland in Portland, Oregon.
Providence College has announced the appointment of Dr. Margaret Watkins as its new Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Watkins has a long background in Catholic higher education and a deep respect for the Dominican commitment to truth and the intertwined call to contemplation and action. She is firmly committed to the vision of liberal arts education embodied by Providence’s School of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Watkins currently serves as the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Seattle Pacific University and is responsible for the oversight of 15 departments. She also is a member of the Academic Leadership Team at Seattle Pacific and serves as the President of the International Hume Society. Mr. Robert Herzog has been appointed as the next Vice President for Finance and Administration at Ursinus College. Mr. Herzog brings to Ursinus an impressive record of accomplishment spanning the higher education, corporate, and professional services sectors. Herzog led the financial operations for the 16 Tech Innovation District, an urban environment that brings together innovators and entrepreneurs in the life sciences, technology, and manufacturing sectors. His strategic and business acumen, coupled with his ability to seamlessly navigate complex financial transactions and build actionable public-private partnerships, helped propel 16 Tech as a leading, and highly diverse, economic hub for the state of Indiana. Prior to this role, Robert held senior finance and administration positions within higher education, most recently at Herzing University in Milwaukee, Wisc., and Berkeley College in New Jersey.
